What is a GAFFER?

A gaffer is an essential role in the film and television industry, responsible for the lighting setup on set. They work closely with the director, director of photography, and production designer to achieve the desired visual style and mood for a scene.

The gaffer is in charge of the electrical department and supervises the lighting technicians or grips. They are responsible for setting up and operating the lighting equipment, including lights, cables, and rigging. They work closely with the cinematographer to determine the placement of lights, the type of fixtures to be used, and the intensity and color temperature of the lights.

Gaffers also collaborate with the production designer and art director to find the best ways to light the set and bring out the desired ambiance or atmosphere. They may need to construct lighting rigs or modify existing fixtures to achieve the desired effect.

In addition to technical skills, gaffers need to have strong communication and organizational skills. They must be able to understand the creative vision of the director and collaborate effectively with the entire team.
